Storm Updates

March 18 - 8:30 AM

It takes a whole community to get through a storm like this—and we’ve felt that every step of the way.

A big thank you to Rico’s Cafe’ and Pizzeria, Traverse City, MI and Fresh Coast Market for keeping our crews fed and fueled during long days in tough conditions. That support means more than you know.

We’re also grateful for the help of our mutual aid partners, Traverse City Light & Power and C.C. Power, who jumped in and worked right alongside our crews to get the lights back on.

And to the many others who offered support—whether it was a warm meal, a kind message, or a helping hand—we see you and we appreciate you.

To our members, thank you for your patience, understanding, and for looking out for one another while the power was out.

And to our team—especially our line crews—thank you for showing up, digging in, and doing the work safely, no matter the conditions.

We’re proud to serve this community.

March 17 - 5:30 PM

You know what an early update means? Good news!

It wasn’t easy, but we’ve nearly made it to the end of this storm — and we’re thankful for the way our members stuck with us through it all.

We’ve restored power to all but one member — we have crews working to replace a pole to get the lights back on for that member as we type this update.

Over the past 3 days, crews worked through incredible amounts of snow, wind, and ice to get the lights back on. At one point, we had nearly everyone restored—and then the storm quite literally caught its second wind, knocking out power again… including for some who had just been restored.

Despite the setbacks, our crews did what they always do: got right back to work.

Here’s a look back at what we were up against:

  • 1,642 members without power
  • Many experienced back to back outages thanks to Mother Nature’s shenanigans….
  • 5 broken poles
  • Lots of wind, snow, ice, and downed trees/limbs

We are happy to share this will be our final storm update.

Thank you for all of the support you showed our team as we worked tirelessly to get the lights back on. We feel lucky to serve this community and are proud to be your cooperative.

March 17 - 2:30 PM

Calmer conditions today are making a big difference in our crew’s ability to get the lights back on!

Restoration isn’t as simple as flipping a switch to get the lights back on. It’s a coordinated effort that goes a little something like this:

  • Main feeder lines that transport power from substations have to go on first. Those main feeders are what brings power to smaller taps off the main line.
  • After main feeders are on, we can start tackling smaller taps.
  • Once those are taken care of, crews can start addressing the most remote outages, many times serving just a single home.

In this case — we made significant progress and then another round of stormy weather set us back a bit. But our team is resilient, and so are our members!

Since this morning’s update, crews have restored power to 195 members and are continuing to work on 12 active outages impacting 252 members.

We’re making great progress and will continue to work around the clock until every member has power.

We will have another update around 7pm.

March 17 - 10:00 AM

Crews are making quick work assessing our 19 active outages impacting 447 members.

Here’s what they’re seeing:
• Trees and branches weighed down with snow and ice on lines
• 3 broken poles

• Downed lines from wind, snow, and ice

With this information, we’ve now reassessed all estimated restoration times (ETRs) to provide the most realistic timeframes based on what our crews are seeing in the field. Currently they range from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM today. Some members may be restored sooner, but again these are the most accurate estimates we can provide right now as we continue working through repairs.

You can view updated restoration times on the outage map above.

Or text STATUS to (800) 442-8616

We understand how challenging outages can be, and please know we are doing everything we can to get your power back on as quickly and safely as possible.

Thank you for your patience, we will have another update around 2:30pm.

March 17 - 6:00 AM

Conditions are improving!

We were able to make a handful of restorations overnight and are starting the day with 24 outages impacting 499 members. The majority of those outages continue to be in Manistee County.

Cherryland’s line crews along with five contract crews are gearing up and hitting the road to tackle these remaining outages first thing this morning. We have dedicated 8 of those crews to restoring power to our largest and longest lasting outages between Brethren and Manistee.

We know extended outages are never easy and we appreciate everyone’s patience and support for our crews and their safety.

We’ll have another update for you around 9:30 AM.

March 16 - 10:00 PM

When we were nearly finished restoring power to all 1,200 members who saw outages today — another wave of brutal wind swept through the area.

It took down huge trees and ice-covered branches, causing outages for another 1,200 members — many of whom had just had their power restored. Crews worked quickly and have now restored power to more than 700 of those members.

Right now — we still have 534 members without power on the southern end of our territory.

Here is our situation heading into the overnight hours:

  • Our daytime crews are wrapping up their work and heading back for their mandatory rest.
  • Once they return, we’ll assess current weather conditions including the safety of driving conditions and whether winds are too extreme to safely work in a bucket truck.
  • That assessment will determine whether we’re able to dispatch overnight crews or if we need to hold them until morning for safety.

We know it’s tough to be without power, especially for extended periods of time. If you don’t currently have power, it may not be restored until tomorrow.

We’ll keep a close eye on conditions and continue to dispatch crews as long as it remains safe to do so.

We truly appreciate your patience while we do everything we can to get your power restored amid these challenging and dangerous conditions. We’ll have another update for you in the morning.

March 16 - 6:30 PM

Just as we were closing in on full restoration, another round of strong wind brought down more ice covered trees and limbs, causing more outages across our system.

Here’s a quick update from Cherryland CEO Rachel Johnson.

March 16 - 4:30 PM

Crews continue battling the wind and snow to get the lights back on, and Mother Nature is pushing right back on our progress. Right now, we have 7 outages impacting about 390 members.

While earlier today, we had restored about half of the large outage impacting members between Brethren and Manistee, that outage just recently came back in.

The good news is — we already have crews working in that area and on top of assessing the outage. Another positive — all other outages have been restored and they can focus on this large Brethren/Manistee area outage.

As the wind kicks back up — there is a chance for additional outages. Our crews are ready to tackle whatever comes our way.

We’ll share another update this evening as restoration work continues.

March 16 - 12:00 PM

We are making great progress! The wind has died down and it’s allowing line crews to work more efficiently. That’s not to say it’s a walk in the park out there — messy roads and ice are still slowing things down.

Here’s a snapshot of our current outage status:

• 16 outages impacting about 370 members in Brethren, Kaleva, and the Marilla Township area.
• Crews are working on 11 of those 16 outages (Shout out to our friends from Traverse City Light and Power and CC Power for their help).
• About 250 members are impacted by one large outage near Brethren where a tree came down on a section of line. We have two crews working on that repair — and if all goes well — we should be bringing those members back online in the next few hours.

• After that large outage is restored, crews will move onto tackling the smaller outages.

While the wind is giving us a break right now — we are expecting it to pick up again later this afternoon and into the evening. Because there is a coat of ice on many of the trees, it’s possible that could lead to additional outages.

We plan to provide another update around 4 p.m.

March 16 - 9:00 AM

We currently have 10 crews working across the system, with additional assistance requested.

Crews are focused in the southern portion of our service territory, primarily Manistee and Wexford Counties.

Throughout this storm, 1,206 members have experienced outages. Crews have already restored power to 775 members, and 431 members are currently without power.

Crews estimate there is about ¼ inch of ice on trees and power lines. That ice, combined with wind, has caused downed branches and trees, which crews are encountering as they work through outages.

While additional wind and weather is expected today, crews are continuing restoration efforts and working through the weather as safely as possible.

We will have another update for you around noon. Thank you for your patience as crews work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

March 16 - 7:00 AM

Our office is closed to the public today due to weather, but our crews and staff are working.

Lineworkers are hitting the road this morning to continue restoring outages. Travel conditions are still challenging in some areas, so it may take a little time for crews to safely reach those locations. f there’s anything our team can help you with — you can still reach us on the phone, via e-mail, or through SmartHub.

If you can, please stay off the roads and allow crews the space they need to work safely.

Thanks for your patience while we work to get the lights back on.

March 16 - 6:00 AM

As you get up and get your day started, please keep safety top of mind. Here’s an update from Grand Traverse 911 — it’s messy out there. Stay off the roads if you are able.

Despite the challenging weather overnight, our crews restored power to about 349 members. At the same time, new outages continued to roll in as ice and wind took down trees and branches. The bulk of our outages continue to be concentrated around Manistee County and the southern end of our service territory.

As of this morning, we have 32 different outages affecting about 190 members. Our overnight crews are getting some well-deserved rest, and we have fresh crews — including contractor support — gearing up to head out and continue restoration efforts.

We’ll share another update around 8:30 AM.

Stay warm, Cherryland members — and stay safe out there.

March 15 - 10:30 PM

Crews are continuing to work through the storm tonight as snow, wind, and ice move across our service area. Right now, we have about 25 outages impacting roughly 260 members.

Many of these are smaller outages, which means each one takes time to assess and repair, and each restoration brings the lights back on for just a handful of members at a time.

We will have some crews continuing to work overnight as conditions allow, while others are being reserved to hit the ground running first thing in the morning.

A quick safety reminder: if you see a downed power line, stay far away and assume it’s energized.

We’ll continue chipping away at outages through the night as long as weather conditions allow and will share another update in the morning. Stay warm and stay safe.

March 15 - 8:45 PM

The stronger wave of this storm has rolled in, and the forecast calls for more snow and ice through the night.

Right now we have a handful of outages affecting about 180 members primarily in Manistee County.

Lineworkers are pushing through the elements to get the lights back on and will continue working through the night as conditions allow. Working in this kind of weather comes with all kinds of challenges, and safety is our top priority. That means outages will take longer to restore and could even stretch through the night.

We appreciate your patience, and as always, you can count on us to keep you updated.

Stay warm. Stay safe.

March 14 - 8:45 PM

We’re keeping an eye on the incoming storm and the National Weather Service is providing a helpful look at what to expect.

Behind the scenes, our team is monitoring conditions and preparing as the weather moves in. Our crews are ready if the storm causes any issues, and we encourage members to take a little time to prepare at home as well.

March 14 - 5:00 PM

We’re keeping an eye on the next band of weather headed our way.

Now is a good time to double-check a few preparedness basics around the house.  A little planning now can make a big difference later.

Stay safe out there.

March 14 - 1:00 PM

With another round of weather on the way, we’re using this lull between storms to share a quick update.

In this short video, we walk through how power restoration happens during a storm and the strategy behind how we tackle outages.

March 14 - 9:30 AM

Taking advantage of the break between storms to move some snow?

If there’s a green transformer box in your yard, try to keep it clear and visible. Snow piles can hide them from plows and drivers, which can lead to damage and outages.

A little extra awareness helps keep the power flowing.

March 13 - 9:15 PM

With snow and wind expected to continue overnight, we’re keeping a close watch on conditions across our service area.

And with the next system moving in this weekend, we continue preparing behind the scenes. Our crews are on call and ready if anything happens, and we’ll be monitoring the weather closely as things develop.

March 13 - 5:00 PM

If you have a generator, take a minute to review these quick safety tips. Using generators the right way helps keep your home safe—and protects the crews working to restore power.

A little preparation now can make a big difference later.

March 13 - 2:00 PM

We’re keeping a close eye on the incoming storm system.

Here’s a quick update on how Cherryland is preparing and what we’re doing to be ready if the weather heads our way.

March 13 - 9:00 AM

Stormy weather can sometimes bring power lines down with it.

If you see a downed line, give it plenty of space and assume it’s energized. Electricity can travel through the ground around it.

⚡ Don’t drive over it

⚡ Don’t touch it or anything in contact with it

⚡ Don’t try to move it

If you spot one, report it right away so crews can take care of it safely.

Stay safe out there.

March 12 - 5:30 PM

Here’s the latest on the winter weather moving toward our area.

Snow, wind, and maybe a little ice are all possible tonight into tomorrow. We’re keeping an eye on the forecast and making sure crews are ready if the weather decides to cause trouble.

Stay warm out there, Cherryland members.

March 12 - 2:00 PM

Looks like winter isn’t quite done with us yet. ❄️

Snow, wind, maybe a little ice — the forecast has a bit of everything. We pulled together a few quick winter storm prep tips to help you stay safe and ready if the weather gets interesting.

We’ll be watching the forecast and ready to respond if needed.
