Co-op Energy Talk
From Tesla to Hyundai to Chevrolet, it seems more electric vehicles are sprouting up in the marketplace every day. But big questions still remain: When will there be an affordable all-wheel drive EV or all-electric pickup truck? Will the EV tax credit stick around? Is there a future where EVs dominate the roadway? Listen in as we sit down with Bill Marsh Jr., co-owner of the Bill Marsh Automotive Group, to discuss the “electrification” of the auto industry.

Early adopter. I’ve had two Prius’s (2005 and 2008) and bought two Hyundai Sonata Hybrids new (2011 and 2013), and we decided to electrify last spring by buying a used Nissan Leaf BEV, which we love. Yes, range is literally cut in half in very cold weather – about 40-45 miles instead of 85 miles per charge. We also bought a used Chevrolet Volt a few months later. Love both of them, obviously use the Volt for our travel/trip car since it is PHEV (plug in electric vehicle – with range extender which runs on gasoline). In winter, it’s now doing about 25-27 miles per charge, instead of 40-42 miles. Looking forward to expansion of the EV charge network in our area.
We put a Level 2 charger at our house for under $500 and it is useful for both the Leaf and the Volt. It speeds up the charging process to a few hours rather than many hours on 110 volt Level 1 charger.
Used EVs are very cheap since people are frightened of battery failure (but the manufacturers warrant them for 8 or 10 years). I had to go to Ohio with a truck & trailer to buy the Leaf, though!
I drive a 2016 Prius. Would love a Prius prime which is a plug in like a volt. Unfortunately the high rise I live in does not allow chargers to be installed.
On another subject Michigan government charges a lot more for regristration fees for hybrids and electric vehicles. This is definitely not helping.
